Deer Management in Tennessee: Finalized 5-year Plan

Finalized 5-Year Plan

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has completed the strategic planning process to develop its 5-year plan for deer management in Tennessee.

The Agency has undergone a comprehensive and inclusive process to develop a strategic plan for Tennessee’s Deer Management Program. The planning process, which began in May of 2017, has been very inclusive of key stakeholders, including commissioners, agency partners, hunters, farmers, and the general public.

The plan was approved by the TWRA Wildlife Division Chief, in February 2019.  Presented at that meeting was a synopsis of the final version of the plan and the planning process. You can view the February 2019 Meeting of the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission here

The plan focuses on building a critical foundation for deer management efforts in Tennessee over the next 5 years (2019-2013). The plan has six major goals including:
• Gathering more information about Tennessee’s deer herd, the harvest of deer in Tennessee, and the desires of Tennessee hunters;
• Developing support programs for landowners and communities to address potential deer-related problems;
• Minimizing the threat of chronic wasting disease;
• Increasing communication efforts between the Agency and the public, and;
• Identifying the resources and funding necessary to improve the hunting, management, and overall health of Tennessee’s deer herd.
