Popcorn Sutton Case Pictures

In February 2008 Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission Agents continued its investigation into moonshine production by Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton.  Sutton had been charged by Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission Agents in April 2007 for illegal possession of untaxed liquor after a fire destroyed the building where his stills were housed.  Sutton was subsequently convicted of felony possession of untaxed liquor in the Criminal Court of Cocke County, Tennessee and was sentenced to two (2) years’ probation.

During the course of the investigation Alcoholic Beverage Commission agents purchased nearly 280 gallons of moonshine and were able to learn the locations where moonshine was being manufactured and stored.  Sutton on one occasion during the investigation showed two (2) firearms to an undercover agent.  After a month’s long investigation by Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission Agents and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, agents served search warrants at three (3) properties in northern Cocke County and located three (3) moonshine stills and nearly 850 gallons of moonshine.

Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton was arrested on March 13th 2008 and charged with – being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and transporting, possessing, selling and transferring distilled spirits and the carrying on the business of a dealer in distilled spirits without paying special tax.  Sutton subsequently entered a guilty plea to charges relating to possession of firearm and unauthorized production of distilled spirits on April 3, 2008.  Sutton was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
