TENNESSEE ARTS COMMISSION SEEKS NOMINATIONS FOR 2007 GOVERNOR'S AWARDS IN THE ARTS
NASHVILLE - - The Tennessee Arts Commission has announced March 13, 2007 for the presentation of the 2007 Governor’s Awards in the Arts, andnominations are currently being accepted. The awards are the state’s highest honor in the arts, and recognize the outstanding contributions of artists, arts organizations, volunteers, schools, educators, local governments, legislators, and corporate citizens. The 2007 awards will be presented in Nashville at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in a ceremony produced by the Commission.
“The awards provide the Commission an opportunity to recognize the state’s rich cultural landscape and reward creative excellence,” says Rich Boyd, executive director of the Tennessee Arts Commission. “The honored recipients must have made extraordinary contributions, and often their influence extends well beyond the state, across the country, and even internationally.”
There are three award categories:
The Folklife Heritage Award recognizes folk artists or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to artistic tradition. The award is intended to honor long-term achievements within art forms that are rooted in the traditional or ethnic culture of Tennessee.
The Arts Leadership Award recognizes organizations, businesses, educators, patrons, arts administrators, corporations, and volunteers that have demonstrated significant support or participation in activities which foster excellence in, appreciation of, or access to the arts throughout the State of Tennessee.
The Distinguished Artist Award recognizes Tennessee artists of exceptional talent and creativity, in any discipline, that over the course of a career, have contributed to the arts and have helped guide and influence directions, trends, and aesthetic practices on a state or national level.

Nominations must be received by the Tennessee Arts Commission no later than 4:30 p.m. onJanuary 26, 2007. Late nominations will be returned. Nominations are reviewed by a panel through an inter-board committee of the Commission.
