POETRY OUT LOUD STATE FINALS TO BE HELD IN EAST TENNESSEE

NASHVILLE - - The Tennessee Arts Commission will host the state finals for Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest at the Bijou Theatre Center in Knoxville on Saturday, March 7 beginning at 10 a.m. (ET).  The competition, presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.

Students from 18 East Tennessee high schools will participate in the state finals, with the winner advancing to the National Finals in Washington, DC, on April 27-28. During the National Finals $50,000 dollars in scholarships and school prizes will be awarded.

Judges for the state finals include Linda Parsons Marion, poetry editor of Now & Then magazine, Blas Falconer, assistant professor and poetry editor of Zone 3 Magazine at Austin Peay State University, and Susan Robinson, executive director of the Chattanooga Arts and Education Council.  Attendance at the state finals is free and open to the public, although seating is limited.
