Protecting Consumers

The Tennessee Attorney General's Office protects consumers and businesses from those who engage in unfair or deceptive business practices

The office is charged with enforcing the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act. These enforcement actions are brought on behalf of the Division of Consumer Affairs and in the name of the State of Tennessee. Although the Attorney General may seek restitution for consumers who have suffered ascertainable losses, the office cannot represent individual consumers.

The office often pursues cases based on complaints received from consumers. The Attorney General encourages consumers to report any business practice they believe is unfair or deceptive to the Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) in the Department of Commerce and Insurance. DCA serves as the central coordinating agency and clearinghouse for consumer complaints regarding unfair or deceptive acts or practices.

The Attorney General works to inform the public about fraudulent business practices and common scams so that Tennesseans can avoid becoming victims of fraud.

State Files Suit against Employment Agencies

Attorney General Bob Cooper, on behalf of Mary Clement, the Director of the Division of Consumer Affairs, has filed suit against a West Tennessee woman for allegedly misleading the public about the services offered at her four employment agencies.

The lawsuit names Linda McCluskey, the owner of one current agency, Britton James & Associates, and three former agencies known as The Franklin Group of America, Hamilton Clark International, and The Renaissance Group International as the principal of at least four separate employment agencies for allegedly promising to find consumers jobs at exaggerated salary levels, promising “career development, career management, and career transition services” and other related “job placement services.”...read the full employment agencies press release.
