The Tennessee Prison for Women (TPFW), located in Nashville, is the primary facility for female felons in the state. TPFW has several missions. It is a reception and classification center for female offenders entering into the TDOC system. The prison also houses inmates of all custody levels, including pre-release participants, work release inmates, and those women sentenced to death. The security designation is maximum.
TPFW offers academic courses that include Adult Basic Education, GED and Special Education. Vocational classes include computer application and literacy, cosmetology, construction, culinary arts and greenhouse management.
TRICOR provides job opportunities through the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) test distribution center and the TennCare hotline.
Inmates also have access to a full range of psychological and treatment programs which include substance abuse, sex offender treatment and aftercare, anger management, pre-release and career management success. TPFW offers a 64-bed intensive drug-alcohol treatment program called the Correctional Recovery Academy, which is operated by Spectrum Health Systems. TPFW also operates a 40-bed job readiness/life skills therapeutic transitional program called EXODUS.
TPFW offers a weekend child visitation program which has received national recognition. The program includes grandmothers as well as mothers. TPFW has a dog training program called PPAWS or Prison Puppies Achieving Worthy Service, that is designed to help rehabilitate inmates while teaching them a marketable job skill.
