RIPLEY – On Friday, November 16, 2018 the Tennessee Department of Correction welcomed the next generation of correctional officers into our workforce.  The ceremony consisted of 19 Correctional Officers who will be serving our locations in West Tennessee at Northwest Correctional Complex (NWCX) in Tiptonville, Tennessee and West Tennessee State Penitentiary (WTSP) and Women’s Therapeutic Residential Community in Henning, Tennessee and Mark Luttrell Transition Center (MLTC) in Memphis, Tennessee.

The special speaker for the event was MLTC Superintendent Ingrid Cox. Cox spoke to the class about the integrity you must have to do the job.  “It’s a tough job. You must be tightly wrapped in honestly and integrity to succeed.  I encourage you to remember your oath and remain professional at all times.  We want to welcome you all to the TDOC family.”

Raneisha Odell, who also graduated with the class will be working at MLTC, said she wanted to try a different career path.  “This is something I have never done before and I wanted to try a different field of work; this career is a good choice for me.  Our instructors taught a lot and I’m looking forward to growing my career with TDOC and moving up.”

During their weeks of training the class learned leadership, listening, teamwork and defense skills.  Special awards were given to those who excelled at obtaining the skills:

  • The Top Gun and Firearms Award went to Officer’s Daniel Broegoe (NWCX), Linda Alexander (MLTC) and Heather Hutcherson (WTSP)
  • The Academic Award went to Officer’s Daniel Boegoe (NWCX), and Fantasa Jackson (MLTC)

  • The Superintendent Award went to Daniel Broegoe, which comes along with a $5,000 scholarship from Bethel University.

The class also worked on a community service project which was a toy dive for Margaret Newton Elementary School in Tiptonville.  Representatives from the school, Tara Vaughn and Suzanne Mathis, were present to accept the donation.
