Speech Language Teacher License

Conversion, Renewal, and Advancement

The speech language teacher endorsement (previously issued on a Speech Language Teacher License) will be issued as an endorsement on a School Services Personnel License.

  • Educators who do not already hold School Services Personnel License will be issued a Practitioner School Services Personnel License with the speech language teacher endorsement.
  • Educators who hold an active Speech Language Teacher license, Apprentice Special Group License, Practitioner School Services Personnel License, or Professional School Services Personnel License may add the speech language teacher endorsement upon completion of an approved speech language teacher preparation program. If an educator holds a Speech Language Teacher License that qualifies for renewal, the educator may convert the endorsement to the active School Services Personnel License. In both cases, the expiration date of the license will not change and educators would be required to meet renewal requirements during the final year on the license.
  • Educators who hold an inactive Speech Language Teacher License, Apprentice Special Group License, Practitioner School Services Personnel License, or Professional School Services Personnel License may apply to reactivate the license if the educator holds a Speech Language Teacher License. In addition, educators who hold an inactive Speech Language Teacher License may apply to reactivate. In both cases, the license will be converted to the Practitioner or Professional School Services Personnel License with a speech language teacher endorsement.

The Practitioner School Services Personnel License will not qualify for advancement if the only endorsement held on the license is the speech language teacher endorsement.  Educators who only hold this endorsement may continue renewing the Practitioner School Services Personnel License.

Advancement Options: Educators who hold the Speech Language Teacher License will not be eligible for advancement unless they hold another endorsement on the School Services Personnel License.

Renewal: The Practitioner School Services Personnel first issuance license with only the speech language endorsement will be renewable with 30 PDPs obtained during the validity period of the license.

Job-Embedded Practitioner: Candidates with a bachelor’s degree who have completed all required coursework but have yet to complete the required 100 hours of clinical experience as part of an approved Tennessee educator preparation program in communication disorders may be issued a Practitioner School Services Personnel License provided that the following conditions are met:

  1. The candidate receives appropriate supervision by the preparation program during the clinical experience.
  2. The local education agency that employs the candidate certifies through a written agreement with the approved preparation program that the candidate will receive direct supervision by a licensed speech-language pathologist (having a minimum of two years of experience as a speech-language pathologist).
