A comprehensive program of strategies to make high schools work
for students and their career plans.
High schools that succeed
- set higher expectations for all students
- increase access to challenging career and technical studies that emphasize
use of high level math, science, language, and problem-solving skills as needed
in the modern workplace
- increase access to academic studies that teach essential college preparatory
concepts using functional and applied strategies through which students can see
the relationship between course work and the future roles that students see for
themselves
- have students complete a challenging program of study with a strong academic
core and a major
- give students access to a system of work- and school-based learning (secondary
and postsecondary) that is collaboratively planned by educators and employers
- give academic and career and technical teachers time to plan integrated instruction
- engage students in a rigorous and challenging learning process
- involve students and parents in an individualized career guidance advisement
system to ensure completion of an accelerated program of study with a career
and/or an academic major
- provide support to career-bound students to ensure successful completion of the
accelerated program of study
- use on-going assessment and evaluation to advance student learning
