The Tennessee Department of Education, in its efforts to best prepare young children for lifelong learning, is proud to offer various initiatives at the preschool level. The Division of School Readiness and Early Learning oversees many of these programs, which follow the Tennessee Early Learning Developmental Standards, or TN-ELDS.
Voluntary Pre-K education is available for 4-year-olds, particularly those from at-risk populations. Voluntary Pre-K programs offer at least 5 ½ hours of instruction each weekday. Tennessee’s Early Intervention System, or TEIS, supports families with children under age three who have disabilities or developmental delays.
Families can take initiative to prepare their children for school by reading to young children at home. The Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation provides resources to promote an early love of reading and learning.
