Because teachers are the biggest influence in schools on student success, Tennessee strives to develop and improve teacher effectiveness. The Division of Teachers and Leaders supports teachers’ efforts to deeply understand curricula, instructional approaches and the professional skills needed for high-quality instruction.
Under Tennessee’s First to the Top education reforms, teachers receive annual evaluations and feedback through a statewide, comprehensive teacher evaluation system that relies on student growth measures. A majority of districts have implemented the Tennessee Educator Acceleration Model (TEAM).
Team-TN.org offers detailed information about the evaluation model and answers to frequently asked questions. See the Report on Year 1 Implementation for the department’s recommendations to improve teacher evaluations in 2012-13.
The Office of Instructional Leadership supports teachers and administrators in Tennessee schools, holds conferences for school leaders and recognizes top educators in the state.
Tennessee Academy for School Leaders, or TASL, provides opportunities for ongoing professional development.
