The Tennessee Department of Education's Office of School Safety and Learning Support in collaboration with the Tennessee Commission on National and Community Service manage a competitive grant program available to all Tennessee school districts. This program supports the integration of service-learning in K-12 public schools.
Service-learning is a teaching strategy in which student address community problems. As an effective teaching strategy, it is designed to help students acquire core course content and skills. Through service learning students develop civic competencies, knowledge and dispositions that lead to a lifetime of civic engagement and service to the community.

The Tennessee Learn and Serve is funded by a grant from the Corporation for National & Community Service.
Through funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service/Learn and Serve America, the Department of Education and Volunteer Tennessee will make funds available through a grant to support school-based service-learning for Tennessee LEA’s grade K-12.
