In the summer of 2016 the department offered a variety of professional development options for teachers. These opportunities allowed teachers to come together with others in similar grades and content areas to network and learn together. They also represented a statewide focus on empowering districts to provide valuable professional development opportunities to support educators.

2016 Supporting English Learners in Language Acquisition

Intended Audience: Teachers and instructional coaches in grades K-12

Course Summary: This training will support and better prepare participants in understanding the needs of English Learners and the process of second language acquisition. Educators will build their knowledge of the WIDA standards and assessment to support instruction and use classroom-ready strategies to better scaffold and differentiate Tier I instruction. This training will also focus on the role of instruction and intervention in supporting a continuum of services for English Learners, as well as how to approach language development within the RTI2 framework.

2016 Writing in Mathematics to Support Student Learning

Intended Audience: Teachers and instructional coaches; the course is differentiated for grades 3-5 and grades 6-8

Course Summary: This training will build teachers’ knowledge of the power of writing in mathematics as an insight into student thinking and conceptual understanding. Educators will learn strategies to incorporate more regular writing opportunities into mathematics instruction and be able to provide feedback to students to link their writing to the larger mathematical essential understandings beyond just procedural steps.

2016 Early Literacy

Grade Bands: Pre-K–K, Grades 1-2, Grades 3-4

Intended Audience: Pre-K–Grade 4 literacy teachers and instructional coaches. This training focuses on core, Tier 1 instruction.

Course Summary: In the early grades, the primary method for engaging students with complex texts is through read alouds. This training is designed to focus on selecting high-quality, appropriately-complex texts for read aloud, how to create read aloud lesson plans that scaffold higher-order questions, how to assemble a unit of read aloud texts that build knowledge and vocabulary, and how to design an aligned culminating task for a unit that includes speaking and writing.

2016 Early Numeracy

Grade Bands: Pre-K–K, Grades 1-2

Intended Audience: Pre-K– Grade 2 math teachers and instructional coaches. This training focuses on core, Tier 1 instruction.

Course Summary: This training will build teachers’ knowledge of the progression of numeracy and how to deepen students’ understanding of numbers by creating a numeracy-rich classroom. This training will focus on standards for place value, addition, and subtraction. Additionally, this training will make important connections to literacy with a particular emphasis on speaking and listening in mathematics instruction.

2016 Preparing Students for ACT, Postsecondary, and Career Success

Grade Bands: Grades 7–12

Intended Audience: Grades 7–12 teachers in all content areas. Instructional leaders, including coaches and counselors, may also attend this training; however, it is designed with classroom teachers in mind. This content will be adapted and shared with school leaders at a future training.

Course Summary: The ACT is important for understanding students’ readiness for postsecondary and career; this year, ACT performance has been included as an element of district accountability and statewide strategic goals. Through this training, teachers will develop a deeper understanding of their role in ensuring students are ready for postsecondary and the workforce by defining specific characteristics of a “ready” student and learning instructional strategies for improving student readiness within the classroom. Additionally, this training will build teachers’ knowledge of ACT content and how they can tailor their instruction to increase students’ ACT scores to meet or exceed readiness benchmarks.

2016 Intervention & Differentiation in Secondary Literacy 

Grade Bands: Grades 6–8, Grades 9–12

Intended Audience: Grades 6–12 teachers and instructional coaches in all content areas. This training is relevant for Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III teachers.

Course Summary: This training supports teachers in planning and implementing literacy-based interventions that address students’ identified skills deficits. Additionally, this training will present instructional strategies that support students in accessing rigorous on-grade level texts and instruction, with a specific focus on differentiation. This training promotes secondary literacy across all content areas.
