First Governor Phil Bredesen and First Lady Andrea Conte announced today the fourth annual statewide “Tennessee Season to Remember” event will be held at the State Capitol on Thursday, December 7, 2006, at 5:30 p.m. Central Time. The First Couple will host the holiday memorial event in the Tennessee House Chambers, located on the second floor of the State Capitol Building.
“Andrea and I would like to invite all Tennessee families whose lives have been affected by violent crime to join us once again for this special holiday event to remember and to celebrate the lives of the loved ones they have lost,” Bredesen said.
“A Season to Remember” was first organized by individuals in Davidson County as a holiday memorial for those survivors of a homicide of a family member. While Bredesen was Mayor of Nashville, the event was held in front of the Mayor’s office at the Metropolitan Court House. The event has since moved to Centennial Park to accommodate the large crowds. In November 2003, Bredesen and Conte established a statewide “Tennessee Season to Remember,” and invited families from across the state to join them at the Capitol for the event.
“The devastation of losing a family member to violent crime can become even more difficult to bear during the holidays,” Conte said. “‘Tennessee Season to Remember’ is one way for families to seek healing and fellowship by coming together in remembrance of the people they love, and in celebration of the lives they led.”
As part of the ceremony, the names of victims will be read in remembrance as each family hangs ornaments on memorial wreaths in honor of their loved ones. Ornaments will be provided, or event participants can make and bring their own, to be hung on a memorial wreath which will be displayed in the Capitol throughout the holiday season. This year’s program will include music provided by the Belmont University Singers.
Parking will be available in state parking lots off Charlotte Avenue. There will be shuttles available before and after the service beginning at 4:45 p.m. Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the service.
