Federal Government Shutdown

November SNAP Benefits Update

The Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) received federal guidance about November SNAP benefits, following the end of the government shutdown.

SNAP households will receive full benefits for November.

  • Because the federal government has reopened, households will receive the remainder of their full, normal amount for November.
  • If your household only received part of your benefits, the rest will be added to your EBT card starting Monday, November 17.
  • Households who normally receive their benefits on the 18th, 19th, or 20th of the month will receive their benefits on those days, as normal.
  • Some households may receive their full SNAP benefit payment on a different date than scheduled.

December SNAP benefits will arrive on the normal date and in the normal amount.

No. Families First benefits are not impacted.

I received a partial November SNAP benefit during the federal shutdown. Why didn’t I receive exactly 65% of my usual SNAP benefit amount?
TDHS carefully followed USDA guidance regarding how to calculate partial November SNAP benefits, based on existing household criteria. Partial benefit amounts were determined based on USDA’s instruction to states.

How was the partial benefit amount calculated?
Per USDA guidance, the amount of benefits was calculated by reducing the maximum SNAP allotment amount to 65 percent for the applicant’s household size and then deducting 30 percent of the household’s net income from the reduced maximum SNAP allotment amount.
