REVENUE SET TO TAKE OVER TITLE AND REGISTRATION
FUNCTIONS JULY 1

RE-DESIGNED WEB SITE WILL REFLECT NEW RESPONSIBILITIES

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - On July 1, all functions relating to the Division of Title and Registration in the Tennessee Department of Safety will be transferred to the Department of Revenue. This transition results from Governor Phil Bredesen's Executive Order No. 36. Signed on April 19, the order called for the transfer to be effective July 1, 2006, with all functions relating to the Division of Title and Registration to be administered by the Commissioner of Revenue from that date forward. Executive Order No. 36 implemented recommendations outlined by Bredesen in March following a report he commissioned by Kroll Inc. to suggest changes at the Department of Safety to improve and streamline processes within the department's management.

As part of this transfer of responsibility on July 1, the Department of Revenue will unveil a re-designed Web site, updated with its new customers in mind. The department's Web site is www.Tennessee.gov/revenue.

"Many synergies exist between Title and Registration and the Department of Revenue, including a customer-service focus, processing and deposit functions, and call-center operations," said Revenue Commissioner Loren L. Chumley. "We are working vigorously to leverage these administrative synergies and hopefully maximize efficiency of these functions."

The Department of Revenue collects approximately 92 percent of total state tax revenue. During the 2004-2005 fiscal year, the department collected $9.6 billion in state taxes and fees. In addition to collecting state taxes, $1.7 billion of local sales tax was collected by the department for local governments during the 2004-2005 fiscal year. Besides collecting taxes, the department enforces the revenue laws fairly and impartially in an effort to encourage voluntary taxpayer compliance. The department also apportions revenue collections for distribution to the various state funds and local units of government. To learn more about the department, log on to www.Tennessee.gov/revenue.
