Motorcycling can be a thrilling and challenging experience. The safe operation of a motorcycle requires practiced skill, knowledge, and a respectful understanding of the limitations imposed by the operator, the machine, and the environment.
Believing in the benefits of rider education, the Tennessee Department of Safety administers the Tennessee Motorcycle Rider Education Program.
This program provides a combination of rider education and other motorcycle issues. For example, public awareness initiatives, information of the effects of alcohol and drugs, licensing procedures.
Students who successfully complete either course will receive a completion card and a certificate. Those applying for a Tennessee Motorcycle License who bring the certificate from an approved Tennessee training site, pass the Vision Test and pay the required fee will have their license skills and knowledge tests waived.
NOTE: If the motorcycle license is the student's first Tennessee license, other requirements will apply. See www.tennessee.gov/safety/dlguide.htm.
The certificate entitles the holder to an insurance premium discount.
Some motorcycle manufacturers will reimburse students for the cost of the course: Ask your dealer about this benefit.
Students will have a new level of confidence, increased skills, and a more enjoyable ride.
The Tennessee Motorcycle Rider Education Program offers two intensive courses to prepare you for the challenges that the streets offer. One is for beginners, the other for more experienced riders. This allows students with similar skill levels to learn together.
The Basic Rider Course(BRC) is an entry level course designed for new riders. It incorporates classroom discussion and hands on practice. It is essential for safe riding. Motorcycles are provided.
The Experienced Rider Course (ERC) is for people who are already riding, but want to learn and practice more advanced skills.
Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF)-Certified Instructors/Coaches teach courses in a safe, off-street environment. These Instructors/Coaches are highly experienced riders with the patience, understanding and knowledge to help students develop the skills they need to become safe, responsible motorcyclists.
Current riders and anyone thinking about riding (ages 14 and up) are encouraged to enroll in a Rider Training Course.
Please call the site you wish to attend for the appropriate course fee.
