78-Hour Holiday Period

In Tennessee, there were 11 fatal crashes resulting in 12 deaths, yielding a fatality rate of one death per six hours and 30 minutes.

  • Six crashes were single vehicle crashes
  • Five were multiple vehicle crashes.

Five (42%) of the fatalities occurred in alcohol-related accidents.

Ten of the fatalities were vehicle occupants.

  • Eight of the 10 (80%) were not wearing safety restraints.
  • Three of the eight (38%) were ejected from their vehicles.
  • No child passengers requiring child restraint devices were killed.

Two of the fatalities were ATV riders. One was wearing a helmet. On was not wearing a helmet.

HIGHEST DEATHS

During the 78-hour 1970-71 New Year's holiday period, 19 people were killed in Tennessee traffic crashes yielding a fatality rate of one death per 4.1 hours.

LOWEST DEATHS

During the 78-hour 1982-83 New Year's holiday period, 8 people were killed in Tennessee traffic crashes yielding a fatality rate of one death per 9.8 hours.

The 2005-2006 New Year's holiday period will begin 6 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2005 and continue until 11:59 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2006. This will be a 78-hour holiday period.

The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services.
