Nashville, Tennessee --- Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) Director Mark Gwyn and Tennessee Department of Safety Commissioner (TDOS) Fred Phillips today announced the merger of the Tennessee Highway Patrol's Criminal Investigation Division into the TBI. The long-discussed move will consolidate all criminal investigative efforts under the state's top criminal law enforcement agency.
"The merger has been under review for some time," said Commissioner Phillips. "By combining all investigative resources into one agency, we will streamline operations and improve the efficiency with which all criminal investigations will be conducted."
TBI Director Mark Gwyn agrees, calling the restructuring a step forward for statewide law enforcement. "This move will have a substantial impact on the Bureau's ability to target mid to high level drug offenders, and will also enhance our ability to concentrate on auto theft investigations."
In many cases statewide, it's common for TBI, CID and federal agents to work cooperatively to solve crimes. The merger grants greater resources to TBI through additional manpower, while establishing one central investigative unit statewide. Also important to the process are the District Attorney Generals, who will benefit from being able to deal with just one agency.
