2004 MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY
6 p.m. May 27 - Midnight May 30
(78-Hour Holiday Period)

In Tennessee, there were 12 fatal crashes resulting in 13 deaths, yielding a fatality rate of one death per six hours.

  • Six crashes were single vehicle crashes; six were multiple vehicle crashes.

Three (23%) of the fatalities occurred in alcohol-related crashes.

Eight of the people killed were vehicle occupants.

  • Five of the eight (63%) were not wearing safety restraints.
  • Two of the five (40%) was ejected from the vehicle.
  • No child passengers requiring child restraint devices were killed.

Five motorcyclists were killed; all were wearing helmets.

HIGHEST DEATHS

In 1973, 26 people were killed in traffic crashes in Tennessee during a 78-hour Memorial Day holiday period, yielding a fatality rate of one death per 3.0 hours.

LOWEST DEATHS

In 2002, five people were killed in traffic crashes in Tennessee during a 78-hour Memorial Day holiday period, yielding a fatality rate of one death per 15.0 hours and 36 minutes.

The 2005 Memorial Day holiday period will begin 6 p.m. Friday, May 27, and end 11:59 pm Monday, May 30. This will be a 78-hour holiday.
