THP Commercial Vehicle Roadside Checkpoint Uncovers Safety Violations

Nashville, Tennessee --- The Tennessee Department of Safety has released results from the Tennessee Highway Patrol's June 7 th Roadside Commercial Vehicle Checkpoint. The checkpoint was held Wednesday, June 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on I-24 at approximately the 135 Mile Marker.

A total of 2,240 commercial vehicles passed through the inspection checkpoint, resulting in the discovery of 79 total safety violations and 15 vehicles and three drivers placed out of service.

The Tennessee Department of Revenue also took part in the effort inspecting trucks for untaxed fuel. No untaxed fuel was found.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Troopers and THP Special Operations K-9s conducted the checkpoint along with the Tennessee Department of Revenue, Governor's Highway Safety Office, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and Tennessee Forestry Association. Trucking classes at Chattanooga State and Tennessee Technology Center in Shelbyville observed the checkpoint. Several members of the Tennessee Trucking Association also took part including: Shaw Transport, Inc., C & S Wholesale Services, Averitt Express, M.S. Logistics, Calhoun Trucking, Circle Delivery, Covington Detroit Diesel, Kenco Group, Getaway Farms, Landstar/U.S. Trucking, Watkins & Son, Inc., Con-Way Freight, and Covenant Transport. Gale Smith & Co. and Scott Insurance participated as well.

The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services. General areas of responsibility include law enforcement, safety education, motorist services and terrorism prevention.
