 >>Index of Current News Releases<< October 8, 2008 MEDIA ADVISORY 12-hour Enforcement Campaign Targets Dangerous Commercial Vehicles Nashville, Tennessee --- The Tennessee Highway Patrol is participating in Operation S.T.O.P. (Strategic Transportation Observation Prevention) today, Wednesday, October 8, 2008. During the 12-hour enforcement program, Troopers in the Knoxville and Cookeville Districts are patrolling known highways and roads used as by-pass routes by commercial drivers, making every effort to stop, evaluate and inspect as many commercial vehicles as possible. Inspections are also being performed at the Knox County Weigh Station. WHO: Tennessee Highway Patrol WHAT: Operation S.T.O.P. WHEN: Wednesday, October 8, 2008 WHERE: Cookeville and Knoxville Districts Operation S.T.O.P. focuses on commercial vehicles, including trucks transporting hazardous materials, rental trucks, and cargo tanks. THP is able to dedicate 480 hours of manpower to this event thanks to grant funding provided through Federal Motor Carrier Safety Alliance Program. The Tennessee Department of Safety’s mission is (www.tennessee.gov/safety) to ensure the safety and general welfare of the public. The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services. General areas of responsibility include law enforcement, safety education, motorist services and terrorism prevention.
