The Tennessee Higher Education Commission maintains an academic program inventory (API) that track changes in the programmatic activity for public higher education institutions. The API is used for a variety of applications in support of the Commission’s mission, including the student information system, performance funding and the SREB Academic Common Market.
The API contains information about the approximately 1,800 approved degree programs currently offered by our public universities, community colleges and technology centers. The inventory is the State’s sole source in tracking concentrations of academic programs.

The degree programs are classified based on the Classification of Instructional Programs (2000 Edition) as published by the U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics. In addition, the HEGIS Taxonomy of Instructional Programs is utilized for the purposes of major taxonomy. The HEGIS taxonomy preceded the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP). The conversion to the 2000 CIP codes occurred with the reporting of the summer 2004 student enrollment and 2004-05 degree completers.
