The Farm is located in Lewis County, near Summertown, Tennessee. This intentional utopian community was founded in 1971 by a small group of people with a spiritual commitment to simple living and self-reliance. Three decades later the community peaked at 1,500 residents and is now home to about 200 like-minded people.
The Farm has pioneered a wide range of social and physical technologies with examples of eco-village living, solar building design, permaculture, mushroom cultivation, composting, and gardening. The many businesses members have originated include The Book Publishing Company, Farm Soy Dairy, Tempeh Lab, Midwifery Workshops, The Mail Order Catalog, SE International (which offers radiation alert devices), Village Media (which offers digital multi-media in all its forms), and other endeavors. The Farm continues to be a community strong in its belief that people can live together and pursue a spiritual path for personal growth, and that inner peace is the foundation for world peace.
