Bibliography of Tennessee Bibliographies
This bibliography includes book or article-length bibliographies of works about Tennessee, and is designed to provide reading lists for persons interested in learning about Tennessee. It is divided by subject, and within each subject area the titles appear in order by author (or title if no author is indicated). The reader should also consult books about Tennessee which contain bibliographies or reading lists, many of which can be found in the TSLA Online Catalog. A good way to find out about new books about Tennessee is to check the Spring issue of the Tennessee Librarian for the "Tennessee Bibliography," an annual feature for over twenty years. In addition, many general subject bibliographies include sections on Tennessee. Not all of the works in the BIBLIOGRAPHY are available in TSLA, although most of them are. The OCLC number is given to help the reader locate the title if it is not available locally. Some titles appear in two or three categories. All keywords and categories are searchable, so materials relating to a specific subject should be easily retrievable. Searching any category listed following the OCLC number should retrieve all titles in that subject area.
GENERAL Note: The two works in this category are companion volumes, covering Tennessee history and culture from prehistoric times through the 20th century. Smith's work covers books and articles published before 1973; Dickinson's work picks up there and covers works published through 1996. Both works contain sections on bibliography, history (general, local, natural and prehistory), archaeology, economics, government and politics, literature, biography, society, culture and religion, military affairs, the African-American and Native American experience, legal and legislative history. Because of their comprehensive nature, these two works are not included in the subject listings below. The reader is advised to consult them both for works on any aspect of Tennessee history and culture. Dickinson, W. Calvin and Eloise R. Hitchcock. A bibliography of Tennessee history, 1973-1996.
