Media Invited to Middle TN Strawberry School

Wednesday, April 27, 2016 | 11:49am

NASHVILLE— Pick Tennessee Products will host a “Strawberry School” media day at Kelley’s Berry Farm in Castalian Springs on Thursday, April 28.

Spring got off to a cool start but the recent extended spell of hot, sunny days will quickly turn the area’s strawberry fields red. Strawberries get all their sweetness from sunshine, and with just enough rain to keep berries growing without getting waterlogged, this may be a banner year for one of the state’s favorite crops. Strawberry season doesn’t last long however, so pickers need to be prepared.

Tammy Algood, Pick Tennessee Products spokesperson and acclaimed food expert, will teach Strawberry School with tips on proper strawberry picking, care, storage and preservation techniques.

Newly-appointed Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture Tom Womack will attend, along with State Sen. Ferrell Haile who will make a special presentation to Kelley’s Berry Farm.

Participating media can tour the farm, interview farmers and gather information about this year’s strawberry crop.
