NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) is proud to partner with DeafConnect of the Mid-South, Inc., the Memphis Fire Department, and the Red Cross to offer a free home fire safety workshop for Tennesseans with hearing loss this Friday (Feb. 26).

The workshop will inform individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing of the importance of fire safety and preparedness in their homes.  Presentations will be given by the SFMO and the Memphis Fire Department.  ASL interpreters and captioning will be provided by DeafConnect of the Mid-South, Inc.

“The sound of a smoke alarm can save lives should a fire occur,” said Gary West, Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance Deputy Commissioner for Fire Prevention. “For people who are deaf or hard of hearing, however, extra steps are necessary to ensure safety. We’re excited to partner with Memphis Fire and DeafConnect to provide Tennesseans with hearing loss the knowledge and tools needed in case of a home fire emergency.”

The workshop will be held at the DeafConnect office and is open to any Tennessean who is deaf or hard of hearing. Free smoke alarms with flashing lights and bed shakers will be available to the first households that pre-register and do not already own an alarm. Space is limited, so registration is required by contacting DeafConnect:
