Tennessee Emergency Communications Board Honored With National Award
NASHVILLE – The NG911 Institute, a Washington, D.C. based not-for-profit that promotes more effective 911 services across the nation, recently presented the Tennessee Emergency Communications Board (TECB) with the Outstanding 911 Call Center/Program Award during NG911’s 14th Annual Honor Awards.
The award recognizes either a 911 call center or a state or regional 911 program for excellence in serving the public, including the handling of emergency situations and the deployment and management of new technology.
TECB is a self-funded, nine-member board located within the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance. TECB was created to establish emergency communications for citizens across the state and assist emergency communications districts (ECDs) in the areas of management, operations, and accountability.
“This award offers further proof that the Tennessee Emergency Communications Board’s statewide, comprehensive vision for 911 services is setting an example for other states and communities when it comes to planning, stakeholder engagement and local input,” said TECB Chair Jennifer Estes. “The Board will continue to set the standard and provide a roadmap for others to follow.”
TECB was recognized for its ongoing technological initiative to modernize 911 communications in Tennessee with the Next Generation 911 project, which replaces Tennessee’s 911 infrastructure with a platform that will provide 911 with more modern capabilities. All wireless traffic has been migrated to the Next Generation 911 network, and just prior to year-end, the TECB had migrated 97 percent of all wireline traffic to NG911. Traffic migration is expected to be completed in April of this year.
“We share this award with our local partners across Tennessee who are the backbone for emergency response in their communities,” said TECB Executive Director Curtis Sutton. “As Tennessee grows, our 911 services must also adapt in order to meet the needs of our citizens. The Board will continue to accommodate the changing demands of our customers and technology.”
