NASHVILLE – The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office recently honored City of Kingsport Fire Department Public Education Officer Barry Brickey for being chosen as the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 2019 Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year.

Brickey, who has served with the Kingsport Fire Department since 2006, earned the national recognition from the NFPA for his innovative and creative educational programs designed to help raise awareness of the importance of fire safety.

“Barry exemplifies public service, dedication, and commitment to serving others,” said Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance Assistant Commissioner for Fire Prevention Gary Farley. “He is an asset to the City of Kingsport, and I am proud to help call attention to this recognition, which Barry so richly deserves.”

Farley joined Sen. Jon Lundberg (R-Bristol) and Rep. Bud Hulsey (R-Kingsport) in the presentation of a certificate of appreciation from Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to Brickey.

“It’s an incredible honor to be recognized for the community risk reduction efforts that I am a part of through the Kingsport Fire Department,” Brickey said. “Thanks to all our KFD shift personnel who gear up, do puppet shows and bring engines to events. They help make the job easier and reinforce all that is taught during presentations to both children and adults. Through all of these efforts, Kingsport and the surrounding communities in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia are safer places to work, live, and play. “

The NFPA honor is the latest recognition for Brickey who received the 2018 Tennessee Public Fire Educators Association Bruce Womack Fire Educator of the Year award as well as the 2006 Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office Fire Educator of the Year award.
