Private Investigation & Polygraph

Purpose

The Private Investigation & Polygraph programs were established in 1990 and 1978 respectively to regulate individuals and companies providing private investigation or polygraph services in the State of Tennessee.  Effective July 1, 2021, the program is housed within the Commissioner-run Detection Services Licensing Program.  The current requirements for the licensure of private investigators and private investigation companies can be found in Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 62, Chapter 26.  Current requirements for licensure of professionals providing polygraph services can be found in Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 62, Chapter 27.

Mission

The mission of the Private Investigation and Polygraph program is to protect the public health, safety, and welfare through the regulation of individuals and companies providing private investigation or polygraph services.

ATTENTION: Be advised, even if you are located in another state, if you advertise, solicit, sell or otherwise provide any of the services described in Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 62, Chapter 26, or Title 62, Chapter 27 in Tennessee or to Tennessee residents, you may be subject to the requirements contained therein, as well as any rules and/or policies promulgated there under.
