Take One Reception To Share Mission Of Hope

JACKSON - The Tennessee Department of Correction will host a reception for the Take One program on Friday, March 24, 2017.  Take One pairs offenders nearing release from prison with faith-based and nonprofit organizations and encourages each organization to mentor one offender for a year after his or her release.  This partnership provides offenders with an additional layer of support to help them overcome barriers to successful reentry and become productive citizens.

State Representative Johnny Shaw (D-Bolivar) and Department of Correction Commissioner Tony Parker will speak at the event, which is aimed at encouraging more faith-based and non-profit organizations to get involved and become volunteer mentors.  Since its launch in 2013, Take One has matched 314 offenders with mentors and the program continues to grow.

“Take One is a great opportunity for community members to take a leading role in making positive change not just for offenders, but for all of our neighbors,” says Commissioner Parker.  “When we work together to ensure an offender’s success, it helps to create safer, healthier communities for all Tennessee families.”

More than 90% of incarcerated offenders will eventually be released back into our communities. Reducing recidivism through programs like Take One is a central element of the Tennessee Department of Correction’s non-negotiable mission to ensure and enhance public safety.
