NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Correction’s unwavering mission is to enhance public safety.  A key part of that mission is to be a great partner to both the communities in Tennessee and the law enforcement community nationwide.  Recently, the state of Florida sustained significant damage as a result of Hurricane Michael.  This storm left millions of people homeless and in serious need.  Because of this natural disaster, the Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) offered assistance to the correctional professionals of the Florida Department of Correction (FDC).  FDC provided the department with a list of items needed that included: nonperishable canned goods, blankets, hygiene items and bottled water.  TDOC staff answered the call and collected enough items to fill two trucks which were delivered to Florida on Wednesday.

According to Commissioner Tony Parker, “The correctional professionals that make up Team TDOC are the best in the nation and I am proud to lead such a caring team.”  He goes on to add, “TDOC is a family that takes care of each other, be it another facility or another state.”

Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Julie Jones shared the following about this outpouring of support, “On behalf of the Florida Department of Corrections, especially staff impacted by Hurricane Michael, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Tennessee Department of Corrections for this gracious donation. Not only will this act of selfless service provide basic necessities to those in need, this gesture symbolizes the bond we share amongst our profession.”

The items collected were delivered to the Santa Rosa Correctional Institution where they will be distributed to FDC staff.
