Haslam Appoints Campbell Criminal Court Judge in 30th District

Campbell replaces Fowlkes in Division VI, 30th Judicial District in Shelby County

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam today announced the appointment of John Campbell as Criminal Court judge, Division VI, for the 30th Judicial District, serving Shelby County.

Campbell replaces Judge John Fowlkes who resigned in July to become a Federal District Court judge.

Campbell has worked in the Shelby County District Attorney General’s office since 1985, most recently serving as deputy district attorney general. He was an assistant public defender in Shelby County previous to his time in the D.A.’s office.

“John has spent his professional career working in Memphis and Shelby County,” Haslam said. “He has extensive experience in the courts, and I appreciate his willingness to serve in this new capacity.”

Campbell graduated from the University of Memphis with a bachelor’s in History in 1980 and earned his J.D. from the Cecil Humphreys School of Law in Memphis in 1983.

For the past 10 years he has also served as a special assistant to the U.S. Attorney. He is a member of the National District Attorneys Association and Tennessee District Attorneys Conference. He is also a consultant to the National Civil Rights Museum.

“This is a great opportunity, and I look forward to the challenges this new job will present,” Campbell said. “I want to thank Gov. Haslam for this appointment and allowing me to continue serving Shelby County.”

Campbell, 54, is married to Debbie, and they have three children, Molly, Tighe and Jack.
