More than $790,000 for Downtown Revitalization Project

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Commissioner John Schroer today announced a $793,534 grant for the second phase of Milan’s downtown revitalization project.

Located on Main Street from Southwest Front Street to Church Street, the project includes resurfacing a section of Main Street and adding new sidewalks, crosswalks, and curb and gutter.

“Tennessee’s downtown districts are an important piece of the state’s character by offering a place for the community to gather as well as providing a hometown feel for visitors,” Haslam said. “The project will provide increased and safer mobility and an economic boost to area businesses.”

The project will also feature decorative benches, trash receptacles, bicycle racks and raised stone planters. Shade and flowering trees and pedestrian lighting will be installed.

“Through transportation enhancement grants, TDOT has funded more than $270 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner John Schroer.  “This program has assisted communities all over the state in their efforts to revitalize downtowns, highlight historic areas, provide alternative means of transportation, and increase opportunities for economic development.”

The grant is made possible through a federally-funded program administered by TDOT.

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

State Sen. Lowe Finney (D-Jackson) and Rep. Curtis Halford (R-Dyer) represent Gibson County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
