Valerie Oliver Named Assistant Commissioner for Administrative Services

NASHVILLE – Valerie Oliver, MBA, CPA has been named assistant commissioner for administrative services for the Tennessee Department of Health. She comes to this position after serving as department controller for TDH since April 2015.
 
"Valerie is uniquely qualified for this position and we are excited she will continue her service with us in this critical role,” said TDH Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH. “She has led innovative initiatives and implemented partnerships to make our processes more effective and efficient, and brings extensive knowledge of the department, state government and fiscal management to this position. I am grateful she has agreed to lead our Division of Administrative Services.”
 
In her role as assistant commissioner, Oliver will oversee all operations of the TDH Division of Administrative Services. She will lead and direct preparation of the TDH annual budget of $620 million and will supervise staff members working in the Budget Management, Procurement Management, Accounts Management, Operations Analysis, Records Management and Facilities Management offices. She will ensure all activities performed by the division are compliant with procedures set forth by the Department of Finance and Administration, Department of General Services, Comptroller’s Office and various federal agencies.
 
“Life is about challenging yourself and focusing on the opportunities given,” said Oliver. “I’m very excited for this opportunity to be able to continue to do what I love and work with some of the finest people in government.”    Oliver was promoted from her position as department controller, in which she was responsible for management of all fiscal operations of the Department of Health. She directly supervised all accounting functions, performed complex accounting reviews and assisted management with decision making. Oliver previously served as TDH fiscal director from 2008 – 2015, managing fiscal operations including receivables, expenditures, revenues and grants.   
 
Prior to joining the Tennessee Department of Health, Oliver served as fiscal director for the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance from 2006 – 2008 and as fiscal director for the Department of Correction from 2004 - 2006. She has also served as an auditor with both the Tennessee Departments of Correction and Revenue.   
 
Oliver holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Tennessee State University and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from David Lipscomb College. She is a certified public accountant with more than 33 years of experience working in fiscal roles with Tennessee State Government. Oliver is a proud mother of two and grandmother of three who resides in Nashville.
