Nashville, Tenn. - Governor Phil Bredesen joined local and state leaders today to award the City of Huntsville with an enhancement grant in the amount of $98,349 to assist with the development of phase two of the New River Greenway.

The project includes the construction of a new trail head, 2,200 square yards of paved parking and 600 feet of trail improvements.  The new trailhead will located at the end of New River Road where it will connect with phase one of the New River Greenway project.

“I am pleased the state is able to support the addition of this trail head to the New River Greenway in Scott County,” said Bredesen.  “The trailhead will serve as the next link in Huntsville’s New River Greenway, which will eventually provide a complete east-to-west pedestrian loop for residents and visitors, and will link Roane State Community College, the downtown district and Town Springs Park.”

“Many residents and visitors already utilize this area to access the New River for canoeing and other activities,” said Senator Tommy Kilby. ”The new trailhead and parking area will be a safer way for people to access the river and will be a point of interest for both residents and visitors to Scott County.”

Representative Leslie Winningham added, “The new trailhead is the next link in the overall greenway project.  I’m pleased the state is lending continued support to this project.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through the Enhancement Grant Program, TDOT has helped fund approximately $189 million in transportation related projects such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely.

The federal grant program was established by Congress in the early 1990s to fund activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.
