Nashville, Tenn. - Governor Phil Bredesen joined state and local leaders today to award the town of Oliver Springs with an enhancement grant in the amount of $28,498 to assist with the Oliver Springs Train Depot Improvement Project.
This project will be located inside the Historic Train Depot and will include the installation of a sprinkler system.

“I’m pleased the state can help the city with their ongoing renovation of the Oliver Springs Train Depot,” said Bredesen.  “Saving this link to the rich history of this area contributes not only to community development and pride but also educates residents and visitors on the story of Oliver Springs.”

“The Historic Train Depot is a source of pride for Oliver Springs,” said Senator Tommy Kilby.  ”And it took the teamwork of a community to bring this project to reality.  I was happy to help.”

“This project is another example of how local and state agencies can work together to preserve our historic landmarks,” Representative Dennis Ferguson added.  “I give my full support to this project which is an example of local government leaders’ dedication to the improvement of our community.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through the Enhancement Grant Program, TDOT has helped fund approximately $189 million in transportation related projects such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely.

The federal grant program was established by Congress in the early 1990s to fund activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.

The installation of a sprinkler system inside the Historic Train Depot will improve a structure that is significant to the history of Oliver Springs and will aid in the continuation of its preservation.

Senator Randy McNally and Representatives Leslie Winningham and John Mark Windle were supportive of this grant for Oliver Springs.
