Nashville, Tenn. - Governor Phil Bredesen joined state and local leaders today to award Giles County with an enhancement grant in the amount of $24,200 to assist with renovations to the historic Chamber of Commerce Building.

The Giles County Chamber of Commerce building is located on North Second Street in Pulaski.  The building, known as the Governor John C. Brown Law Office Building, was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1983.  The building not only has a significant historical value to the community, it also serves as the “front door” for visitors to Pulaski.

“Tennessee is home to countless historically significant buildings,” said Bredesen.  ”I’m pleased the state can offer Giles County and other communities the resources they need to preserve these structures for generations to come.”

“This building is in desperate need of repairs,” said Senator Doug Jackson.  ”This project will save a cherished and historic piece of property that is invaluable to the community.”

Representative Eddie Bass added, “This building serves as a Welcome Center to those visiting Giles County.  It is important that we keep it in top shape.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

“Through the Enhancement Grant Program, TDOT has helped fund approximately $189 million in transportation related projects such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely.

The federal grant program was established by Congress in the early 1990s to fund activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.

The renovation of the historic Chamber of Commerce Building includes re-roofing, repairs to parapet walls, gutters and downspout system.  Work will also be performed on the interior hallways, lobby and offices.
