Greene Named Assistant Commissioner for Department of Education

Nashville, TN – Meigs County Superintendent Robert Greene will be the new assistant commissioner for resource and support services for the Tennessee Department of Education, Commissioner Lana Seivers announced today. In that capacity, Greene will lead the division responsible for areas such as local finance, facilities, budget, and human resources.

“Robert brings great experience and knowledge, particularly in the local finance arena,” Commissioner Seivers said. “With Governor Bredesen’s priorities set on education, Robert will play a critical role in fulfilling the missions of the Department. He is highly respected by educators throughout the state, and I think he will be a tremendous addition to the Department.”

Greene led the Meigs County School System for 25 years and was 2005-06 Tennessee Superintendent of the Year. Beyond his education leadership, Greene served on the local Chamber of Commerce, Health Advisory Council and Workforce Development Council. Greene has also been active at the state level in various professional organizations and has participated in a wide variety of state education initiatives.

“Advancing education has been my passion for more than 25 years,” Greene said. “This appointment gives me the opportunity to serve the state’s education system at a juncture I believe is ripe for positive change. I am honored and excited by this new challenge.”

Greene earned an EdS at Tennessee Technological University, a master’s degree from Union College in Kentucky and his bachelor’s degree at Tennessee Wesleyan College. Prior to becoming superintendent in 1981, he taught for seven years in Meigs County and Monroe County and was a principal in Monroe County. He will assume his responsibilities with the Department April 2, 2007.
