Jackson, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is leading the way in promoting a healthy environment for our planet, through this year’s EARTH DAY 2007 Celebration. On April 21, 2007 TDOT’s Region 4 Complex will be transformed into West Tennessee’s largest civic event designed to educate and entertain the entire family, while addressing the critical needs for a cleaner environment.

“TDOT is known for its day to day work, building and maintaining roadways across the state, but with each project, we consider the environmental impacts of our work,” said Region 4 Director Chuck Rychen. “We’re proud to host the EARTH DAY 2007 Celebration this year. We hope everyone will bring their families out for educational festivities, fun, live music and free food.”

People are also encouraged to bring old cell phones, used printer ink cartridges, old documents and unused eyeglasses to the event. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be on hand to recycle printer ink cartridges and old cell phones, the Cintas Corporation will shred and recycle old documents, and the Lions Club will recycle old eyeglasses.

This unique EARTH DAY 2007 celebration will feature The American Indian Tribal Dancers, free tulip poplar saplings to the first 500 visitors, educational and environmental exhibits, door prizes, live music from the TDOT Band, plus the “Tennessee Trash” Car.

Earth Day celebrations started more that 45 years ago as a grassroots effort to bring attention to the plight of our physical and natural environment. Today more than 500-million people around the world set aside this day to bring awareness to current and potential environmental problems.

TDOT embraces this tradition by planning and hosting this event for the citizens and communities in and around Jackson/Madison County.
