Knoxville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced today that the Type II Noise Wall project in Lake City will move forward after positive response from the community. TDOT conducted a public meeting with members of the Lake City community on May 29th to gauge public interest in the project and received an overwhelmingly positive reaction. The next steps in the project will be field survey and design of the new wall.

“When the department went to the community to ask if they would support a noise wall in this area, the response was positive and enthusiastic,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “I encourage the residents to continue participating in the development of the noise wall as we move into the design phase on the project.”

The Type II Noise Wall project is located along Interstate 75 in Anderson County from 4th Street to Industrial Park Road in Lake City and is the first stand-alone noise wall project to be constructed in East Tennessee. The wall will be approximately 2,200 feet long with an average height of 11.5 feet.

TDOT will conduct a more in-depth study of the noise impacts to the area to determine the final design of the wall. Once the wall is designed and ground surveys completed, a second public meeting will be held to gather the citizens’ input on the type and color of the wall.

The Type II Noise Wall Program provides noise barrier walls in qualifying neighborhoods that were established before high volume roadways were built. In order to be considered, neighborhoods must meet specific criteria in order to obtain the necessary federal funding which makes the program possible.
