Nashville, Tennessee— The Department of Safety (TDOS) has opened a new Driver License Station at 1070 N. Gateway Avenue in Rockwood. The state-of-the-art facility, which began serving customers on Tuesday, August 21, is located just across the parking lot from the old station and is also home to the Tennessee Highway Patrol in that area.

In addition to being much larger and more comfortable, the new station has a separate testing room and provides more privacy for customers. The new facility also has a kiosk unit that allows customers to use a credit card to renew their license or get a duplicate copy, meaning they don’t have to wait in line.

“We are pleased to be able to offer these new services to residents in the area,” stated Deputy Commissioner Greta Dajani. “Our long-term goal is to see that every Tennessean is no more than 30 minutes or 30 miles from a driver license station.”

The new Rockwood DL Station is open Tuesday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., except on the second Wednesday of every month when it opens at 8:00 a.m.

“We’re excited to have this new station with better hours to serve the people of Roane County,” said Representative Dennis Ferguson. “Improving access to these vital services is a critical function of state government.”

Senator Tommy Kilby added, “We’re happy to have a new station in Rockwood and to have been able to collaborate with the Department of Safety on efforts to make this new Driver License Center a reality for residents.”

The opening of this new DL station in Roane County comes as TDOS prepares to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Tennessee Driver License. The state’s Driver License Law was enacted in 1937, making Tennessee the 32nd state to license drivers. TDOS will mark the occasion September 21 through September 23, 2007, at all DL stations. Residents will also get the chance to view old driver licenses, manuals, vintage patrol cars, among other items which will be on display at the Music City Mopar Club’s 18th Annual Car and Truck Show at the Wilson County Fair Grounds in Lebanon. TDOS invites everyone to come celebrate 70 Years, Driving Tennessee!
