Wheelchair-Bound Hunters Get Increased Opportunity

Wednesday, August 29, 2007 | 07:00pm

Wheelchair-bound hunters in Tennessee have a chance to archery hunt deer at the Cordell Hull Wildlife Refuge in addition to expanding hunting opportunities at the established wheelchair-bound hunting zone at the Cordell Hull Wildlife Management Area.

According to the TWRA, deer gun/archery for wheelchair bound hunters at the Cordell Hull WMA will be held on November 17-18, with a bag limit of two deer either sex (bonus deer). The refuge also features a wheelchair-bound archery only hunt scheduled September 22-23 and a deer-gun/archery-wheelchair-bound hunt on November 3-4. The above non-quota hunts on the Refuge have a bag limit of one deer, either sex for each hunt. The refuge is open for wheelchair-bound hunters during the above hunts and closed to all other hunters on those hunt dates.

At the “Corps of Engineers Roaring River Campground” on the Cordell Hull WMA, the wheelchair-bound hunter zone is open the entire statewide season for deer, small game, trapping, fall turkey and waterfowl.
For these wheelchair-bound only hunts, each hunter must have the appropriate hunting licenses and a Type 094 WMA permit. All deer hunting ends December 14, 2007 at the Cordell Hull WMA.

TWRA staff will be on hand to assist wheelchair-bound hunters at both the refuge and at the WMA wheelchair-bound zone on the first weekends of the archery season, September 22-23, and muzzleloader season, November 3-4. The November 3-4 date is a gun/archery hunt for wheelchair bound on Cordell Hull. Assistance will continue at the WMA on the opening weekend of deer gun season on November 17-18.
