MEDIA ADVISORY: Tennessee Highway Patrol Officers Teach Teens About Safe Driving

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be on hand at the Creekwood High School football game, Friday October 24, 2008, to promote teen driver safety. Captain Chip Miller and Special Program Lieutenant Tony Barham will use THP’s rollover simulator to demonstrate first-hand the potential deadly results of failing to use safety restraints.

October 19-25, 2008, is National Teen Driver Safety Week. In 2007, 166 teenagers were killed in Tennessee in motor vehicle crashes.   According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car crashes are the leading cause of fatalities among teens in the United States. 
 
The Tennessee Department of Safety’s mission is (www.tennessee.gov/safety) to ensure the safety and general welfare of the public. The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services. General areas of responsibility include law enforcement, safety education, motorist services and terrorism prevention.
