NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Education Commissioner Timothy Webb announced today that nine additional Tennessee elementary schools will participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable program this school year due to a federal grant. Participating schools receive funding to offer free fruits and vegetables to students during the school day. The program aims to increase student consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.

“With rising health care costs at the forefront of the nation’s attention, the ability to instill good health habits early has risen to urgent status,” Governor Phil Bredesen said. “Tennessee is taking advantage of every opportunity to teach students how to make healthful choices and reinforce those lessons where young people spend much of their time — in our schools.”

Schools submitted applications to be considered and were selected based on factors such as staff commitment, efficient use of resources and innovative promotional efforts. A total of 34 Tennessee schools are participating this year. To view a list of previously announced participating schools, visit https://news.tennesseeanytime.org/node/123.

“Schools have a responsibility to students to provide a positive environment that promotes good choices and behavior,” Commissioner Webb said. “This initiative reinforces the vital importance of eating well and protecting one’s health.”

The grant allows these schools to provide approved fruits and vegetables at no charge to students during the school day. The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program was created through the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2008. The grant runs from July 1, 2008 through September 30, 2009.
