Forecast for Ice in West and Middle Tennessee

NASHVILLE – The State of Tennessee is taking precautionary steps to prepare for severe weather predicted for West and Middle Tennessee this evening. As procedure, the state’s Emergency Operations Center was activated to ensure state agencies stand ready to respond to any emergency situations that might arise from winter weather.

"This proactive measure is an important step in our planning and preparation," said TEMA Director James Bassham. "Activating the state’s Emergency Management Plan means that a variety of state agencies are prepared to help mitigate any severe weather conditions that impact Tennessee and to respond to possible emergency situations."

The primary danger to the public during an ice storm is from hazardous driving conditions. The Departments of Transportation and Safety have asked the public to "take it slow" when there is ice and snow. View tips for winter driving by clicking on "Ice & Snow: Take It Slow" at www.TNgov.

Another hazard can be created by downed power lines, which can be knocked down by falling tree limbs or heavy accumulations of ice. If you encounter a power line on the ground, it is important you stay away from it as it may still be energized. Call your local utility to report the downed line.

If your power goes out, please be mindful of using alternative heating sources safely. Keep kerosene heaters away from any nearby potentially flammable objects, provide adequate ventilation, and always refuel your heater outside. You should never use a charcoal grill to heat your home, as it can lead to a deadly buildup of carbon monoxide.
