Nashville, TN – The National Alternative Educators Association has appointed Tennessee school safety consultant James Witty to its board of directors to lead the development of national standards for alternative programs. “James is genuinely dedicated to improving educational opportunities for all students and his work reflects his passion,” said Mike Herrmann, Executive Director of School Safety and Learning Support. “Tennessee is well-represented by having James guide this important work in alternative education.”

The Office of School Safety and Learning Support trains educators in research-based programs proven to help create a safe, positive school environment. Mr. Witty serves as the liaison for alternative education, character education, zero tolerance data, emergency services, school resource officers and school safety Web resources. He has more than 10 years experience working with at-risk students as a teacher, district administrator and state coordinator. He is also a certified instructor and trainer for the American Red Cross with extensive knowledge in emergency management.

“All students deserve a second chance and alternative education programs often provide them with just that,” Witty said. “Across Tennessee and our nation, alternative education programs are increasing the likelihood that student will graduate. My goal is to support educators in their efforts to lift up students, so they can realize their own true potential.”
