Governor Awards Grant for Nurse Training in Dyer County

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have awarded a $299,310 federal grant to Dyersburg State Community College.  The grant money will be used to train 20 Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to become Registered Nurses (RNs) at the Dyersburg State Community College Jimmy Naifeh Center, in Covington. The grant is named after Speaker of the House, Jimmy Naifeh of Covington.

The nursing grant comes from federal funds allocated by the U.S. Department of Labor under the provisions of the Workforce Investment Act of 1999, which is administered by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. 

“I am pleased to see these federal funds being used by Dyersburg State Community College to help address the shortage of Registered Nurses and to benefit healthcare employers in Dyer and surrounding counties,” said Governor Bredesen. 

 “I am proud to award this federal grant money to train nurses in West Tennessee,” said Commissioner Neeley. “Speaker Naifeh is dedicated to promoting training opportunities and addressing the healthcare shortage in our state.

“I appreciate this grant being named after me and would like to thank Commissioner Neeley and Governor Bredesen for their continued support in solving the nursing shortage in Tennessee,” said Speaker Jimmy Naifeh.
