Nashville, Tennessee — A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will arrive August 24, 2008, to examine all aspects of the Tennessee Department of Safety’s (TDOS) policy and procedures, management, operations and support services, announced TDOS Commissioner Dave Mitchell.

“Verification by the CALEA team is part of a voluntary process to gain accreditation,” said Department of Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell.  “CALEA accreditation is a highly prized recognition of public safety professional excellence and has been maintained by TDOS since the department first underwent the process in 1999.”

Between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Monday, August 25, 2008, the public will have access to the CALEA assessors through a toll-free telephone number, (877) 459-3038, located in the assessor’s work area.  Public comment is welcome and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.  A copy of the Standards is available at each of the THP district headquarters.  The locations and the telephone numbers are also available at the Department of Safety web site:  http://state.tn.us/safety/thp.htm

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the Department of Safety’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement, Inc.
