Nashville, TN - Education Commissioner Timothy Webb today announced the appointment of Robert W. Greene to the position of Deputy Commissioner of Education. Mr. Greene joined the department April 1, 2007 as Assistant Commissioner for Resource and Support Services. In this role, Mr. Greene oversaw implementation of major improvements to state education funding of local school systems under BEP 2.0, a responsibility he will maintain as deputy commissioner.

“I make this announcement with the confidence that the critical operations of this department are well-served by Robert’s knowledge and dedication,” Commissioner Webb said. “As we make improvements to create better opportunities for students in Tennessee, he is the right person to help steer education to a higher level.”

Mr. Greene served as superintendent of Meigs County Schools from 1981 to 2007 and earned the honor of Superintendent of the Year in 2006. Throughout his career, he has been an advocate for education at the local, regional and state levels. He was a charter member of the Tennessee Association of Administrator of Special Education; chaired the regional superintendent study council for six years; and was active in state superintendent organizations.

“I am honored to support an education leader like Timothy Webb at a time when Governor Phil Bredesen has put education at the forefront of our state’s agenda,” Deputy Commissioner Greene said. “I have worked with an excellent team as assistant commissioner. I look forward to advancing the innovative work our Governor and Commissioner are undertaking to improve education in Tennessee.”

Greene earned an EdS at Tennessee Technological University, a master’s degree from Union College in Kentucky and his bachelor’s degree at Tennessee Wesleyan College. Prior to becoming a superintendent, Mr. Greene was a school principal in Monroe County, and a teacher and coach in Monroe and Meigs counties beginning in 1972.
Beyond education, Greene served on the local Chamber of Commerce, Health Advisory Council and Workforce Development Council.
